In an attempt to conquer the continent, the Imperials natives to the province of Cyrodiil made a deal with the Daedric prince Molag Bal. At the beginning of Elder Scrolls Online, players join one of three factions that not only oppose the Imperials and Molag Bals undead army, but will also battle one another for the imperial throne. Diablo III Reviewed
May 17, 2012 6:00 AM
Macworld UK has posted a new review of the recently released Diablo III from Blizzard Entertainment. The long awaited third installment in the action RPG series once again returns players to the demon plagued world of Sanctuary. Macworld UK gave the game a score of 4 stars.
From the review:
This time around you can choose from five different character classes barbarian, demon hunter, monk, witch doctor and wizard each with its own unique skills and abilities. The graphics have been updated too, and now provide a true 3D view of the action. However, Blizzard seems to have made a conscious decision to stick to the dark, cramped corridors and simplistic graphical style of the earlier Diablo games, and I did find myself longing for the bright, epic landscapes of recent role-playing games such as the Dragon Age series and Skyrim.Another thing that hasnt changed much is the sheer finger-clicking addictiveness of the Diablo formula. The moment you arrive in Tristram you find yourself confronted by a horde of shambling zombies who promptly proceed to poop little piles of gold on the floor after youve pummelled them into submission. Unencumbered by much in the way of plot or supporting characters, Diablo III simply throws monsters and magical loot at you until your fingers bleed and your mouse bursts into flames.

The Walking Dead Episode 1 Reviewed
May 16, 2012 6:00 AM
Examiner.com recently posted a new review of The Walking Dead: Episode One from Telltale Games. The game adaptation of Robert Kirkman's graphic novel series is a five part episodic adventure horror game that will follow the struggles of survivors attempting to live in a world filled with undead.
From the review:
The Walking Dead Episode 1 brilliantly succeeds at capturing everything that makes the graphic novels and the TV show compelling. The characters are complex. The excellent voice acting is aided by facial animations that, although a bit stiff and awkward, still do a good job of conveying the hidden, subtle complexities bubbling underneath each character.
Where the game may arguably fall a bit shortat least for someis in its gameplay. The game is pretty short, for starters, and you can finish it in around 2 hours or less. This seems a little bit short for an episode even by Telltale standards. More importantly, during those two hours youll spend as much time listening to and watching the story play out as you will actually interacting with the game (solving puzzles, talking to characters, etc.).

Wasteland 2 To Use Unity Engine
May 16, 2012 6:00 AM

A sequel to the classic post-apocalyptic RPG of the 80's, Wasteland 2 will be a top down, turn-based, tactical RPG that the developers promise will "stay true to its roots."
I can officially announce that we've chosen the Unity engine for Wasteland 2. It meets all the criteria we need. First screens looking good. Although we are using Unity this is not an in browser game but an executable file. It's hard to beat the crowd sourced community of Unity.

Gabriel Knight Creator To Release Two New Adventure Titles
May 14, 2012 6:00 AM
Jane Jensen's Pinkerton Road Studio recently reached its Kickstarter funding target for two new adventure games. The first title, Moebius, will be a 3rd person point-and-click adventure game featuring two difficulty modes and a variety of puzzles to solve. The second title has not yet been revealed. If the games are successful Jensen hopes to revive the Gabriel Knight series, which she created, designed, and directed.
Moebius Story: Malachi Rector is an antiquities dealer who hunts down artifacts all over the world. After his upscale Manhattan store is destroyed in a fire, he's hired by billionaire Amble Dexter to investigate a series of events and document them in his meticulous way.The first event is the death of a young woman in Venice. She was found hanging from a bridge. As Rector investigates her life, compiling facts for his dossier, he realizes that the beautiful and talented young woman -- and the interrupted path of her life -- had great hidden significance. It appears that Amble Dexter and his associates are playing with the fabric of life in a way Rector never imagined was possible. Even he, Rector himself, is part of a larger pattern. He must figure out who is doing what, and whether their intentions are for good or ill, before he can decide if he will play his pre-scripted role -- or try to change the outcome. This is a metaphysical thriller ala Dantes Equation and Gabriel Knight.
Art Style & Mechanic: 2D, graphic novel look and feel (like an updated GK1). It will be a 3rd person adventure game with a point-and-click mechanic and lots of sophisticated puzzles. It will have two modes: Casual Mode (with hints, a hotspot finder and a simplified interface) and True Adventure (more challenging -- like the Gabriel Knight games).
Size: Moebius will be about the size of GK1 50 rooms with 10-20 hours of gameplay (depending on your level and gameplay mode).

Heroes Of Newerth: Mid Wars Released Today
May 11, 2012 6:00 AM
Today is the release date for S2 Games Mid Wars, a new game mode for its multiplayer action RPG, Heroes of Newerth. Based on a popular custom game mode, Mid Wars is designed to give players a high action, low stress experience on a new map.
For those unfamiliar with this new game mode, allow us to explain. Historically speaking, the Mid Wars movement began with players hosting games of HoN on the Forests of Caldavar using only the middle lane (with the top and bottom lanes ignored) and all the action centralized at the middle of the map. What made Mid Wars such a compelling experience was that respawn times were turned off, meaning that once a player died, he or she was almost immediately thrust back into the action and lived to battle it out in teamfight, after teamfight. The result was high action, low stress gameplay that we aimed to capture and expand upon throughout the Mid Wars development process. This excellent community-created idea was just dying to be made official with a standard rule-set, its very own Matchmaking system, and a change of pace from the normal HoN experience that people have enjoyed since HoN was released two years ago. Consider Mid Wars as a reprieve from the intensity that can arise from playing Forests of Caldavar time and time again or as a low pressure game mode designed to encourage you to try out new heroes you may be unfamiliar with. We have worked with the community to capture what made playing "All Mid" great and fun while taking it to the next level with creative and intelligent design decisions that improve on the current model.
Check out a trailer and developer blogs about Mid Wars at the links below.

Steven Peeler Discusses Drox Operative
May 10, 2012 6:00 AM
Random Tower of Games has posted a new interview with Soldak Entertainment's Steven Peeler about the company's upcoming starship action RPG, Drox Operative. The game will put players in the role of an elite starship captain and will feature warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic and evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer.
4. Compared to your last game, Din's Curse, what kind of new features players could find? The biggest new feature is basically all of the diplomacy with the races vying for control of your current sector of space. Its up to you who to support, who to hinder, and how you will accomplish all of this. Just a reminder, its your goal to eventually be on the winning side. It gets tricky pretty fast though.
For example, the ship Cyano is terrorizing the star system that you are currently scouting. You believe that you could win the battle and the Cortex are offering a pretty hefty bounty for the destruction of Cyano. Do you destroy Cyano and collect on the bounty? In this case, the Cortex are the second most powerful race, they are well behind the Drakk empire, the Cortex and the Drakk are at war, and the Drakk dont particular like you.
Yeah, it just got much more complex.
If you take the bounty, you will make the second most powerful race happier and more stable, but at the same time you will piss off the most powerful race. Do you take the quick cash and try to repair the relations hit later? Do you throw your full weight behind the Cortex and try to overthrow the Drakk? Or do you kiss up to the Drakk and let the Cortex handle their own problems? Its completely up to you.

DLC Quest Now Available For OS X
May 10, 2012 6:00 AM
Going Loud Studios has announced the release of DLC Quest for OS X. Originally designed for Xbox 360, the game pokes fun at the proliferation of downloadable content for games while offering a quest to "defeat the bad guy, save the world and get the girl!" DLC Quest was the winner of Official Xbox Magazine's Xbox Indie Game of the Year 2011 and a finalist for Best Indie Game at the 2012 Canadian Videogame Awards.
"It's great to be able to bring DLC Quest to a portal that's so convenient for Mac gamers," says Ben Kane, the lone developer of Going Loud Studios. "It's been a long trip from Xbox to OSX, but Mac gamers are a passionate and vocal bunch. More than happy to give in to the demands for a port!"What happens when DLC practices go too far? An indie developer makes a game that mocks the industry and its foibles, that's what! Defeat the bad guy, save the world and get the girl! But first you'll need to find coins to buy DLC to enable animation, sound and even pausing.
Thankfully this is just satire and all the DLC is purchased with in-game coins. But consider it a cautionary tale for the future...
Features:
- Platforming action! Coins to collect, a princess to save, a bad guy to defeat. You like that stuff, right?
- 16 different DLC packs, each providing quiet introspection on the state of the gaming industry
- 10 awardments to earn and make you feel reasonably satisfied with yourself

Space Quest Creators Reveal Kickstarter Project
May 9, 2012 6:00 AM
Two Guys From Andromeda has announced the beginning of a new Kickstarter campaign to raise $500,000 for Two Guys SpaceVenture, a new sci-fi adventure game. The game will be developed by Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe, creators of the classic Space Quest series, and will feature the trademark game elements of the team's previous efforts.
Hey there, Classic Adventure Gaming fans as well as those relatively new to our worlds. Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe, aka The Two Guys from Andromeda, are back together. No, your optic orbs have not been on a bender. You read correctly. After a very brief 20+ year hiatus, we have joined forces once again and are tooling-up to bring you a new Space Adventure, or SpaceVenture, if you will.We fully intend to bring back every element that you guys loved from our original games! Youve been very clear and concise as to what you enjoyed from our previous efforts. Heres a short list of things you can expect if our project gets funded:
- A Sci-fi adventure from Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe working happily together as a team once again.
- Hilarious death sequences
- Tons of the fresh (and moldy) pop-culture references
- Fun and unique humor
- Art design and direction by Mark
- Dialog that will make you blow nostril Tang, written by Scott along with Mark
- Narration of all this by Gary Owens and the voice acting of other characters by the above mentioned quality industry voice talent
- Game music that will hopefully give you chills and wedge in your main orb for the rest of your natural Earth life and make you wish you lived inside your computer!
- A game that you will feel comfortable playing with your children, but with some entertainment that will safely appeal only to the adult psyche
Yes, we know, they all say that, but WE really mean it! Fresh from the Sarcasm Cluster and the Hyperbole Nebula, this is the first Kickstarter effort by the Two Guys From Andromeda. We're here to tell you THIS is huge to us.
We really are going to do things differently than some of the other campaigns you may have seen, even though we love those people, so don't take that in a mean spirited manner. We know you guys are aching for something truly special, so we've been butting heads in the Andromedan luxury bunker to come up with a way you guys can feel extra, extra special while we empty your bank accounts for our own devious, suspect ends: You are going to get something fun to play throughout our Kickstarter campaign! Yeah, you read that right!
Here is what were talking about:
- Every time we reach another $100,000 milestone, well release another enhanced demo version for you to play.
- The playable demos will be the direct ideas of Scott and Mark. (Who else?)
- We will take your feedback to improve the demos for each milestone.
- The demos will be written in HTML5, a programming language that will make the games compatible with most browsers and smart phones right out of the gate!
Follow the link below to read more about the project which, if funded, will be available for a variety of platforms including Mac.

IMG Reviews The Walking Dead Episode One
May 9, 2012 6:00 AM
Inside Mac Games has posted a new review of The Walking Dead: Episode One from Telltale Games. The game adaptation of Robert Kirkman's graphic novel series is a five part episodic adventure horror game that will follow the struggles of survivors attempting to live in a world filled with undead.
Here's an excerpt:
If you're expecting the likes of Left 4 Dead then TWD is not for you. While there are a number of panicky, intense and gruesome action sequences, the focus of the game is character drama and interaction, along with small doses of puzzles and exploring. It plays out like an interactive graphic novel more than anything else, which is either a good or bad thing depending on what you expect. This allows it to feel grounded and weighty and take a more deliberate pacing, though at the cost of any deep gameplay. There's simply not that much to do in the game other than talk to people, solve a few short puzzles and madly scramble away from or fight against the undead. Personally, I didn't mind this and found myself immersed and thoroughly entertained every step of my two hour journey through episode one. But those looking for a more traditional point and click adventure experience may be disappointed in the lack of exploration and puzzle solving, which is minimal.

May 8, 2012 6:00 AM
In prepration for the release of the much anticipated action RPG sequel, Diablo III, Blizzard Entertainment has posted a new Launch Day Preparation guide. The guide includes information about launch dates, presale downloads, and early installation.
Regional Launch TimesAs previously mentioned in the announcement of our midnight launch events, the launch time of the game is broken down by region.
The Americas (U.S., Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and South East Asia) servers open at: 12:01 a.m. PDT, May 15Digital Presale Download
If youve purchased a digital copy you can begin downloading your client right now, and we highly encourage you to do so. We also have a Diablo III presale visual guide available that may be helpful. As it may take you some time to download the full game, its best that you begin early. This may afford you additional time to troubleshoot any downloader or installer issues you may encounter.
Early Install
We will be unlocking the game's installer at 8:01 a.m. PDT on May 14. This will allow you to begin installing the game, troubleshoot any issues you run into, download and install the launch day 1.0.1 patch, and be ready to play as soon as the servers come online.
Global Play Launch Time
Well be turning on Global Play when the game has launched in all regions. This means that you will not be able to play in a region outside your home region until after the Americas midnight launch at 12:01 a.m. PDT on May 15. Well provide an update once Global Play is enabled, and youll then be able to change the region you connect to through the games options. More information can be found in our Global Play introduction article.
Launch Night Login
As weve unlocked the Diablo III installer early, many people will be ready to log in right when the servers go live at midnight, so were going to be closely monitoring the impact on the service. Its possible well need to adjust the rate at which were logging people in to ensure a stable experience, and if we do you may see a delay when attempting to login. Please be aware that a delay of up to 40 seconds is possible while the game attempts to connect you. If your connection doesnt succeed in 40 seconds, youll be presented with an Error 37 message and asked to try again. If you see this error it does in fact mean that you should try again. Well be working around the clock to keep you informed of any issues that are occurring through the in-game breaking news window, as well as the official forums.

May 8, 2012 6:00 AM
Fatshark has announced a new weapon naming promotion for its upcoming squad based RPG Krater. Participants will submit their best name ideas for three weapons, and the winners will see their weapons in the game and their own names featured in the game's credits.

Developing A Visual Style For Deus Ex: Human Revolution
May 7, 2012 6:00 AM
The Critical Bit has posted a new interview with Deus Ex: Human Revolution art director Jonathan Jacques-Bellette. The artist discussed a variety of topics including developing a unique visual style for Human Revolution, some of the areas which didn't make the cut, and the importance of visual elements in telling a story.
Tell us about the importance of visual allegory and motifs in games. How do they affect the players perception of the world? How do they impact the narrative?I believe these are some of the most important aspects of the production design of a video game. Sadly, my personal opinion is that very few game developers understand this. Visuals in a game should be as much about communicating as decorating (probably the former even more than the latter). The world we live in is a world of visual messages and constant visual communication. Our brains are constantly assessing and analyzing situations, people, and places, based on their respective visual stimuli. We do this at a conscious level, but even more so at an unconscious level.
Because of all this, I believe its imperative, through production design, to infuse a video game world with higher meanings and motifs in its foundational art direction. If done right, it creates a soul and a potent flavor for the game. When you Combine a highly crafted world with a passionate attention to detail and mise en scne, the world suddenly starts living inside the players head, long after he turns off his console.
As far as their relationship to the narrative, I believe its a two way street. For example, in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the concept of the Renaissance analogy, the Icarus myth, and all their related motifs and symbols first came from the production design side. But, they were fully embraced by the narrative designers who began juggling with all those variables as well. It ended up being a constant dialogue of ideas between the two departments, and they both highly influenced each other as to how they would treat those main ideas in their creations. Basically, it made the concepts even stronger!

IMG Reviews LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7
May 7, 2012 6:00 AM
Inside Mac Games has posted a new review of Feral Interactive's LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, the final installment in the series. The game gives players the chance to control Harry, Ron, Hermione, and over 150 other playable characters as they build Dumbledore's Army, hunt for Horcruxes, and prepare for the final battle with Lord Voldemort.
Here's an excerpt:
There's at least one area that LEGO games tend to consistently succeed at, and that's presentation. The cartoony cutscenes cleverly create comedy as they reinterpret scenes from the books, the scenery looks quite lush, you have plenty of variety in characters' looks to use (even if it's just a different outfit skin for the main characters), and there's a reasonable variety of interactive objects to throw around and destroy. The audio is also quite good, as is expected of any major title. There are plenty of songs from the movies throughout the game, a nice chunk of grunts and growls for the characters in cutscenes, and more than enough sounds of destruction to make blowing tables to pieces a satisfying experience.

IMG Reviews Botanicula
May 7, 2012 6:00 AM
Inside Mac Games has posted a new review of Amanita Design's latest point-and-click adventure, Botanicula. The game focuses on five unique characters on a mission to save the last seed of their home tree from infestation by evil parasites. To succeed players will have to rely on each of the five character's skills as they travel through the game's more than 150 locations.
Here's an excerpt:
Visually, Amanita Design has created a wondrous masterpiece. It's a striking look, a hand-drawn tapestry of insight into the most minute detail of nature and insects. It's an absolutely charming vision of a small, but seemingly secret world in which you can take your time to touch and feel every part of it. Each screen bursts with color, detail and subtlety. Take the time to explore and interact and you'll be rewarded. The audio is just as the strong as the visuals. From the soft sounds of the tree and nature, to the clicks and scuttling of bugs and the squeals of glee or terror from the 5 friends, Botanicula immerses you into its small but amazing world. The soundtrack, composed by alternate Czech band DVA, is just as enchanting as everything else in this game.

Red Baron 2012 Flys Onto Macgamestore
May 4, 2012 6:00 AM
iEntertainment Network's Red Baron 2012 is now available for purchase from Macgamestore.com. The World War I aerial combat simulator features enhanced graphics, historical accuracy, and exciting gameplay for players of all skill levels.
Red Baron 2012, Enhanced Graphics (EG) gives players fast-flying combat aerial fights across the embattled skies of Europe during World War I with a brand new graphic system, with more polygons and more detail in the aircraft, the terrains, and all the special effects. New sounds, new tracers, new explosions greatly enhance the Red Baron 2012, EG experience!World War I was the period in History when the aeroplane came of age. Two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, USA, invented the aeroplane in 1903. Eleven years later, the military had begun to purchase this new invention, primarily for observation purposes.
By 1916, the airplanes were being armed with more powerful and more deadly guns. What began as a gentlemens profession turned into a deadly aerial ballet. The pilots on the Allied side did not even wear parachutes. It was not considered manly and the commanders thought it would make pilots abandon their airplanes too early.
The biggest ace of the period was Baron Von Richthofen, The RED BARON! The Red Baron collected 80 kills during the war. Von Richthofen learned to fly in March 1915 and died in April 1918 in a battle with 8 Sopwith Camels.
World War I flying games have sold millions of units at retail. Two products alone have sold over 1 million units. Sierra Online launched the first game called Red Baron, which sold more than 700,000 units. MicroProse launched Knights of the Sky and sold over 300,000 units (this game was produced by IENT CEO, JW Wild Bill Stealey).
World War I flyers did not use missiles, radars, or battle from a distance. These pilots could look the enemy in the eye. These pilots also flew close to the ground and always had to be concerned about ground fire. Red Baron 2012 is a graphically excellent, historically correct, and exciting simulation game for arcade, realistic, and expert players.

IMG Reviews 3SwitcheD
May 3, 2012 6:00 AM
Inside Mac Games has posted a new review of ZUXXEZ Entertainment's 3SwitcheD. The game features classic puzzle action in addition to support for 3D-ETTM technology, which utilizes cameras found in most laptops, desktops, and smartphones to give players 3D perspective control by tracking their eye and head movements.
Here's an excerpt:
Gravity Switch is a lot like Clearing clusters, except in this version, you control gravity, that is the direction that the free tiles fall to when they are free to move. For instance, you clear a set of tiles, leaving spaces to the left and the right. If the remaining tiles fall to the left to fill the empty squares, you see this will create a set of four green tiles, but if the tiles fall to the right, you create a set of eight red tiles, for more points. Once you change gravity, it stays that direction until you change it again. You continue until there are no more possible sets of two or more. If you remove all the tiles from the board, you can move onto a bonus board and start again.

Heroes Of Newerth: Mid Wars Coming May 11
May 3, 2012 6:00 AM
S2 Games has unveiled a new developer blog for Mid Wars, an upcoming game mode coming to its multiplayer action RPG, Heroes of Newerth, on May 11.

Diablo III: Global Play, Auction House, Wizard Trailer
May 3, 2012 6:00 AM
In the days leading up to the May 15 release of Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo III, the company has been releasing a variety of information about the action RPG sequel. This time Blizzard has unveiled a new trailer showcasing the Wizard class, information about Diablo III's auction house, and details about usiing Global Play to play on servers in other regions.
Wizard Class:Finally, our in-depth look at each of the five heroes of Diablo III comes to a brilliant conclusion with the wizard. As we approach the worldwide release of Diablo III on May 15, we've featured every hero on our Diablo III launch site, and this week, you can take in a heap of information about these veritable thunderstorms of lethal power.
Rumors from Caldeum detail the events surrounding a certain brash student of the sorcerous artsa promising, even brilliant, pupil, but one whose unbridled ambitions have led to violence and disorder in the respected schools of that august city. This young woman was trained by some of the most skilled mages in the world, but rather than follow their guidance, she chose to display an uncooperative spirit, constantly pushing past their restrictions in pursuit of knowledge that they claimed she was not prepared for.
Auction House:
The gold-based auction house opens its doors worldwide on May 15 with the launch of Diablo III, and we plan to bring the real-money auction house online approximately one week after that. This is a new service that includes lots of complex elements, so we are going to take a little extra time to ensure the game gets off to a good start before we flip the switch and open the real-money auction house for business.
Global Play:
Diablo III's global game servers are grouped into three distinct game regions:
In general, players will create characters and play in their "home" region, which is determined by where they live (specifically, the country of residence registered to their Battle.net account). Global Play gives players the ability to switch to any of the other game regions via the in-game options menu, either before or after they log in to the game.
- The Americas - For players in the US, Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.
- Europe - For players in the European Union, Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa, and Middle Eastern countries such as Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
- Asia - For players in South Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

FTL: Developing A Rogue-Like In Space
May 3, 2012 6:00 AM
RPG Codex recently posted a new interview with Subset Games's Justin Ma and Matthew Davis about FTL: Faster Than Light. Described as a "spaceship simulation roguelike-like," the game gives players the chance to engage in exploration and combat in the vastness of outer space.
What do you feel are the greatest strengths of the roguelike genre, and how do they come into play in FTL?While the more typical pure roguelike games are a lot of fun, what excites us most is when developers take elements of roguelikes and combine them with other established game archetypes. This interest began after being moderately obsessed with Spelunky.
We tried to pull our favorite aspects from the roguelike genre and put them into FTL. This can be seen in the randomly generated galaxy, the way unexpected loot influences your strategy, how permadeath dramatically increases tension, and an end-state that seems just out of reach.
With its streamlined interface, FTL seems to be developed with a more casual audience in mind compared to "hardcore" roguelikes. What will the game have to offer to a veteran roguelike player? How do you ensure that such a player finds enough variety and depth in the game's mechanics to warrant multiple replays?
As much as we love classic sims, we hate the burden of over-complicated UI. We value simple controls and ease of use, but we are still hardcore gamers at heart and FTL was designed specifically for players like us. The game truly shines when players are faced with managing power issues, environmental hazards, boarding parties, injured crew, and an enemy ship... all at once.
Our ultimate goal is to have an intense and difficult game where each failure can be traced back to a decision the player has made; making them want jump back in with their knowledge and strategy refined.
