KFI’s John And Ken, Clear Channel Denounced For “Hate Profiteering”
The day before Clear Channel
‘s shareholder meeting in San Antonio, Texas, the National Hispanic Media Coalition delivered over 16,000 signatures to the company’s board of directors demanding that Clear Channel remove John Kobylt and Kenneth Chiampou from KFI AM in Los Angeles. Despite having what NHMC calls a “zero tolerance” policy that prohibits discrimination, the organization says Clear Channel Radio exhibits a pattern of hateful rhetoric, particularly on The John and Ken Show
. The coalition accuses Clear Channel of a “pattern of hate profiteering, and particularly its blatant disregard for the atmosphere of hate and intolerance that John and Ken are breeding in the Los Angeles area.” A letter accompanying the signatures says the company fails to abide by its own policy and allows Kobylt and Chiampou “to repeatedly release the private contact information of private figures, leading to hundreds of death threats and harassing phone calls from Clear Channel listeners.” According to the letter, the pair’s targets include skilled workers who happen to be “people of color and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community”. The letter says more than 30 companies have pulled advertising from The John And Ken Show
. Clear Channel and its Premiere Networks faced
a similar controversy when advertisers were spooked by public outcry over comments Rush Limbaugh made about a law student seeking health insurance coverage of contraceptives.

Will ‘Unforgettable’ Live On? TNT & Lifetime Looking At Cancelled CBS Drama Series
EXCLUSIVE
: The cancellation of CBS’ freshman drama Unforgettable
was one of the closest calls this upfront season. Now the procedural starring Poppy Montgomery and Dylan Walsh is exploring a move to cable. I’ve learned that producers Sony Pictures TV and CBS TV Studios have had preliminary conversations with TNT and Lifetime about potentially picking up the series. Unforgettable
, which centers on Carrie Wells (Montgomery), a New York detective with the ability to visually remember everything, would make sense for both TNT and Lifetime. TNT has had a lot of success with female-lead cop procedurals with The Closer
and Rizzoli & Isles.
Lifetime has tried hard to launch one with two recent series, The Protector
and Against The Wall
, both of which were cancelled after one season. Turner has been the most open to rescuing broadcast series with NBC’s Southland
going to TNT and most recently Cougar Town
moving to TBS.
When asked what went wrong for Unforgettable
to warrant the cancellation
after a relatively solid first-season run, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said the question is not “what went wrong with Unforgettable
but what went right with the new pilots.” Unforgettable
averaged 12 million viewers and a 2.5 among adults 18-49.deadline.com | 18-May-2012 03:53

Women Dominate Early Competition Films As Marion Cotillard Hits The Festival For The First Time: Cannes
isn’t even here, are saying there is a controversy in Cannes this year over the fact that no women directors are represented in the official selection. That may be true — there were four last year — but anyone who has sat through the first four competition films as I have must realize that, so far at least, women are the dominating factor in all of them. And from what I have been tipped about the remaining films it is just the beginning. Women may not be behind the camera this year but they are very prominent in front of it. They are also prominent on the jury making up nearly half. When asked about the lack of women directors this year, Oscar winning juror Andrea Arnold said she would never want one of her movies considered for a berth just because it was directed by a woman. Nevertheless women are a very visible force in the films seen to date. And there is the image of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe on the festival’s poster everywhere you go here.

Doug Liman Reacts To ‘I Just Want My Pants Back’ Cancellation: “I’m Not Done Fighting’
A day after MTV
‘s surprising cancellation of freshman comedy I Just Want My Pants Back

“I’m no stranger to disappointment,” he added, pointing out how the Sundance film festival passed on his cult 1996 movie Swingers.

WWE Monday Raw Expands To Three Hours, USA Puts Talent Upfront At Its Upfront Event
In its first upfront event during the traditional broadcast upfront week, USA Network kept it casual, with a party vibe — cocktails on the way in, a music performance to start, a whole music set to close the presentation, which was followed by more drinks, and no executives taking the stage. Instead, the network kept its tradition of having the stars of its series present the new shows and talk up its ratings performance. The network also made some news, with WWE star John Cena announcing that, starting with WWE Monday Night Raw ‘s 1000th episode on July 23, the show will permanently expand to three hours. The USA actors kept the proceedings mostly entertaining, with some deviating from the script. (Bruce Campbell!) Talking about USA’s streak of finishing six consecutive years as the No.1 basic cable network, Suits ‘ Gabriel Macht called the network the Harvey Specter of television, after his ruthless-but-always-winning character on the show. Psych ‘s James Roday and Dule Hill were assigned to talk about USA show’s social media presence. “The technology has been able to put the watercooler in people’s hands, which sounds heavy and highly impractical,” Roday said. The two introduced Cena whose speech provided one of several spontaneous moments during the event. Talking about the 1000th episode milestone for WWE Raw , he turned to Roday and Hill and said, “That’s 800 more episodes than…Burn Notice ,” for which he was heckled by Notice co-star Bruce Campbell, sitting ... Comcast’s New Broadband Price Tests Raise Questions For Video Streaming
This is a subject that chills web video companies and customers — especially the day after Verizon Wireless announced that it will eliminate its unlimited data subscriptions for 4G customers. Comcast
, the No. 1 broadband provider, said in a blog post
that it’s “time to begin to move to a new plan” for its Internet service. As you might expect, the post clearly describes changes consumers might like, including one that raises the residential usage cap to 300 gigabytes a month from 250 GB. But the post is vague about potentially unpopular changes — leaving open the possibility that Comcast might dramatically raise the price users pay if they exceed the cap. Comcast says it must “address the realities of managing a network that services more than 20 million customers.” But Internet activists fear that a hefty new fee could deter consumers from subscribing to rival services such as Netflix which use a lot of bandwidth to stream movies and TV shows. The possible change “illustrates that Comcast is really trying to discourage subscribers from experimenting with online video alternatives,” Free Press Policy Adviser Joel Kelsey says. “We call on Comcast to drop the caps and these exorbitant overage fees entirely.”
Comcast is positioning the change, including the higher monthly usage cap, as an improvement for consumers. It says that it’s responding to protests over its initiative offering unlimited VOD to Xfinity cable customers who use ... Read More »deadline.com | 17-May-2012 22:52

Cannes Film Festival: Distributors To Watch
Buying is already getting underway in Cannes with films acquired on the eve and first day of the market. There is a lot of quality product out there and many distributors with already packed slates are eager not to miss an opportunity. Execs are calling it a buyer’s market, but one important company may be sitting this one out. Here’s a look at some key players in town this year:
The Weinstein Co
: Harvey Weinstein often sets the pace of the market here in Cannes. When he spends, everybody else seems to also. If that holds true this year, it will mean vibrant activity on the Croisette. On the eve of this year’s Cannes, The Weinstein Co announced it had picked up Wayne Blair’s The Sapphires
, the Australian feel-good film that’s screening in official selection. They’re also close to a deal on hunt for Bin Laden pic Code Name Geronimo
. The company has 2 pictures in the competition, Lawless
, which it acquired last year (when it was still called The Wettest County In The World
), and Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly
(which also used to go by a different name, Cogan’s Trade
). The timing of the Sapphires
announcement is reminiscent of the Weinsteins’ pick-up of The Artist
last year. TWC has a packed roster for 2012, but COO David Glasser tells me, “Last year we had a busy slate going into the market and we ended up buying. We’ll ... Read More »deadline.com | 17-May-2012 11:49
