(Washington, D.C.) -- Amnesty International today condemns the Russian government's fining, under a new St. Petersburg law, of a prominent LGBTI rights activist for spreading "gay propaganda" after the activist picketed city hall with a poster that read "homosexuality is not a perversion."
Nikolai Alexeyev announced today the news of his conviction via Twitter: "Who can pay my fine for gay propaganda in St. Petersburg? 5000 rub, 130 euros, 180 usd."

Death penalty 2011: Alarming levels of executions in the few countries that kill
Countries that carried out executions in 2011 did so at an alarming rate but those employing capital punishment have decreased by more than a third compared to a decade ago, Amnesty International found in its annual review of death sentences and executions.
Only 10 percent of countries in the world, 20 out of 198, carried out executions last year.

Poland Must Investigate Its Role in U.S. Secret Prisons, says Amnesty International

(Washington, D.C.) -- Poland must cease hiding behind state secrecy and allow a fully transparent investigation into its role in U.S.-led rendition and secret detention programs, Amnesty International said.
The call came after the Polish prosecutor general changed the prosecutor in charge of an investigation into the matter for the second time in a year. No explanation has been offered for the decision.

EU urged to reject international anti-counterfeiting pact
Amnesty International today urged EU governments not to join the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), branding it a “Pandora’s box” of potential human rights violations.
Starting this Saturday, 11 February, a range of civil society groups and individual citizens have planned protests in many European cities to voice opposition to ACTA before the European Parliament decides whether to formally ratify the pact later this year.
