Songwriter Sentenced to Three Years in Prison
The WiPC protests the three-year prison sentence and exorbitant fine imposed on the well known singer-songwriter Lapiro de Mbanga (real name Pierre Roger Lambo Sandjo) on 24 September 2008 for allegedly taking part in anti-government riots. Mbanga is known as an outspoken critic of the government, both as a songwriter and an opposition party member. The WiPC fears that the sentence is connected to his critical lyrics and, as such, is in violation of his right to freedom of expression. It calls on the Cameroonian authorities to release Mbanga immediately and unconditionally.

Nigeria: A Touchstone Called FOI Bill
I have no problem with the FoI Bill. But libel for instance has to be a criminal offence. If you do not do that, it is like saying give us freedom to do what we want to do. The nation needed to approach any law on freedom of information with great caution. -David Mark, Senate President of Nigeria (in September, 2008)

Nigeria: The FOI Bill - Because Everything Government Owns is Yours! (2)
I envisage this zinger in Section 2 of the Bill to throw up issues of locus standi in order to create not only delays and frustrations but also veiled and varied interpretations of national security which could fetter the judge's discretion. The requirement in this section is further proof that the Yar'Adua Administration would continue the secrecy, hypocrisy, and failed policies Nigeria has suffered over 100 years.

Nigeria: Four Years After, Controversy Still Trails FOI Bill
Information, according to Thomas Jefferson, former President of the United States of America, is the "currency of democracy". But it is doubtful if Nigerian legislators share Jefferson's view or so it seems. Four years after the Freedom of Information (FoI) Bill scaled through the first reading at the lower chambers of Nigeria's National Assembly, Nigerians still bear the brunt of ineptness of its leaders in the executive and legislative arms of government whose respective responsibility it is to pass and assent to the bill. LAW EDITOR Adam Adedimeji traces the intrigues of FoI Bill and the efforts of civil society groups to see to its passage against all odds.

Africa: Pambazuka And the 'Yes And No' of Solidarity
As Henning Melber underlines in his discussion of Pambazuka's commitment to social justice, solidarity is a multi-faceted notion of shifting meaning and use for its appropriators. Reviewing the experiences and intellectual traditions of figures such as Frantz Fanon and John Sanbonmatsu, Melber argues that while solidarity will never be a fixed state of mind, the goal of mediums like Pambazuka will always centre on the struggle for equality, justice and human dignity.
