A row sparked by boxer Manny Pacquiao's comments on gay marriage has damaged the world champion, but has not so far affected any of his mega-buck endorsement deals, his spokeswoman said Friday.

Pacquiao told a US website this week he was opposed to same-sex unions, in an article that erroneously suggested the Philippine superstar had quoted a biblical passage calling for gays to be put to death.

Newcastle sign Scotland scrum-half Lawson

Newcastle Falcons on Friday signed Scotland scrum-half Lawson from Premiership club Gloucester.

Lawson, 31, has agreed a two-year contract and becomes Newcastle's third key signing in the last few days following locks Carlo Del Fava and Scott MacLeod.

Lawson has won 30 Scotland caps, making his debut against Australia in 2006 and has been part of two World Cup campaigns. He has also captained his country.

"I am really looking forward to joining up with the Falcons this summer," Lawson said.

Two NATO troops killed in Afghan attack

Two NATO soldiers were killed and six others wounded in a rocket attack on their base in Afghanistan's eastern province of Kunar Friday, an Afghan official with NATO forces said.

"Two ISAF soldiers were killed and six others injured in a Taliban rocket attack on an ISAF base in Nari ditrict today," a local spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said.

Two other local officials confirmed the account, while the ISAF press office in Kabul said that "two service members died following an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan".

WhatsApp tops UK app charts: Apple

The WhatsApp messenging system, which allows users to send messages for free, has topped Apple's App Store Official UK charts.

WhatsApp Messenger held off Pandemic 2.5 - a game in which players aim to spread a disease across the world - leaving it in second place.

The leading app, from WhatsApp Inc, allows cross-platform mobile messaging that lets people exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.

Third place on the iPhone paid-for charts went to Angry Birds Space by Rovio Mobile Ltd, a puzzle game based on the successful Angry Birds game series.

US rap star 50 Cent tweeted Thursday that is recovering in hospital and posted a picture of himself with an array of cuddly toys -- although some questioned whether it was all a publicity stunt.

The rapper posted a string of messages on Twitter starting Wednesday with photos of himself in bed, after being hospitalized with what a friend, DJ Drama, told XXLMag.com was a stomach bug.

"I don't want to go into surgery," he said in one of the first tweets, showing him lying down and looking sleepy, adding "@FloydMayweather call my phone why your phone off."

Moody's downgrades 16 Spanish banks

Moody's on Thursday cut the debt ratings of 16 Spanish banks by one to three notches, citing the effects of the ongoing recession and the reduced creditworthiness of the Spanish government.

The action hit the leading bank, Santander, with a three-notch downgrade to A3, and the number-two bank, BBVA, was lowered by three steps to A3.

Two other large banks, Banesto and CaixaBank, were also cut to A3.

Moody's cited "renewed recession, the ongoing real-estate crisis and persistent high levels of unemployment" as key to the ratings reduction.

US stocks lose over 1% on Europe fears

US stocks closed with losses well above one percent Thursday as negative news continued from Europe, with Greece's woes deepening and Spain falling into recession.

Strong quarterly earnings from Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, were not enough to shatter the gloom on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 157.50 points, or 1.25 percent, to 12,441.05 in closing trade.

The S&P 500-stock index dropped 19.92 (1.50 percent) to 1,304.88, while the tech-rich Nasdaq plummeted 60.35 (2.10 percent) to 2,813.69.

Patrons at Paris's "Crazy Horse" breathed a sigh of relief on Thursday as topless dancers got back on stage following the first-ever strike over pay at the famed cabaret.

The club's 18 dancers got back down to business of baring it after management agreed to their demands of a 15-percent salary increase and better recognition of their hard work, one of the bar's owners, Philippe Lhomme, told AFP.
