Iraq opens airport in holy city of Najaf
Iraq opened a new airport in the southern city of Najaf on Sunday in what the prime minister said was a key step in the reconstruction of a country devastated by war.
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, mostly Iranians, travel to Iraq every year to visit Shiite shrines in Najaf and another holy city, Karbala. The new airport is expected to boost the numbers of pious tourists.
At a ceremony, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki described the $250 million airport as a vital element in Iraq's economic development. A military airfield was renovated for the new airport, and several flights were expected to land on Sunday.

In the depths of despair, Suzan doused herself and her 14-year-old daughter with gasoline and prepared to set them both on fire.
The Iraqi refugee's dream of reaching Europe was dead. Suzan, a hairstylist, had fled her homeland months earlier under threat from Islamic extremists and paid a smuggler $18,000 to sneak her and her daughter Aya from Turkey to Greece. But when they reached Edirne, near the Greek border, the smuggler vanished.
Suzan returned to Istanbul, where she feared the only fate for her and Aya was prostitution.

US general: al-Qaida may be easing effort in Iraq
The top American commander in Iraq tells The Associated Press there are signs that al-Qaida's senior leaders may be diverting fighters from the war in Iraq to the Afghan frontier.
Gen. David Petraeus said in an interview Saturday in his office in Baghdad that fighters who otherwise would have been sent to carry out bombings and other attacks in Iraq may be going to the rugged, lawless tribal areas of Pakistan along the Afghan border.
He says there are intelligence signs that the heavy pounding al-Qaida has taken in Iraq lately may be causing leaders of the terrorist network to reconsider their priorities.

Five-star hotel planned for Baghdad
Iraqi officials say they have approved plans to build a five-star hotel in the Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone.
Iraq's National Investment Commission says land for the project is being leased by the Summit Global Group, a U.S.-based investment company.
Robert Kelley, head of Summit Global, says the 300-room hotel will cost $100 million. He says American and Iraqi investors are involved in the project, but he did not name them.
At a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, Kelley said construction would begin soon, but he did not specify a date.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Saturday, seeking to build on the improved security situation in the country to promote investment.
Iraqi officials said Brown was holding talks with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Baghdad.
Brown is expected to hail a reduction in violence in Iraq, particularly in the southern province of Basra, which was under the control of British troops until they handed over to Iraqi forces last December.
