Gustav nears Jamaica, hurricane strength seen Friday

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Gustav neared the southwestern coast of Jamaica as of 5 a.m. EDT Friday, heading toward the Cayman Islands, with the storm expected to regain hurricane strength later Friday or on Saturday.

Gustav, about 85 miles west of Kingston, Jamaica and about 220 miles east-southeast of Grand Cayman, was packing winds near 65 miles per hour. When winds reach 74 mph the storm will regain hurricane strength and the NHC expects it to be a "large, powerful hurricane as it approaches the northern Gulf Coast" likely on Tuesday, according to forecast tracks.
